Sense Poem

Sense Poem
MadWords
line 1: Pick a fruit, vegetable or food.
line 2: tell what it SOUNDS like
line 3: SMELLS like
line 4: TASTES like
line 5: LOOKS like
line 6: FEELS like
For example,
Salsa
It sounds like lava pouring down a hillside
It smells like gardens of fire
It tastes like a cornucopia of harvested crops
It looks like a clogged up red river
It feels like heaven in my mouth!
Then, delete the “It sounds, smells, tastes, looks, feels like” part of each line and you have your final draft:
Salsa
Lava pouring down a hillside
Gardens of fire
A cornucopia of harvested crops
A clogged up red river
Heaven in my mouth!

Concrete Poem

1.    Choose an object or animal.

2.    Write 5 lines that physically describe your choice using descriptive language (use your senses, and interesting adjectives, adjectives, adjectives!).

3.    Write 5 lines that tell how you feel about your subject.  Draw from your own experience.

4.    Draw the subject as accurately  as you can.

5.    Insert your poem on the lines of your drawing.

6.    For your final draft, you will need to erase the lines under your words, so that only the words themselves create the image of your subject.

Acrostic Poem directions

Acrostic Poem
Madwords

An acrostic poem is a poem that is written using a single word as its subject.  So:

1.    Pick the most fantastic book you read during your 6th grade year.
2.    Write the title in capital letters going down the left margin of your paper.  Each letter begins that line’s wording.
3.    With each line write a phrase that describes the story hidden inside your book.  (Think about your senses to help you get your ideas down: sight, taste, sound, touch, smell.)
4.    From the first line, write in couplets (rhyming lines) to develop your poem.
For example,
Even in death, the chosen grow young             (a)
Life as they knew it, no longer is sung             (a)
So now Liz walks, her life does unpack            (b)
Every step she takes forward, she takes ten steps back    (b)
Where there once was family, she finds now a void    (c  )
Her most cherished memories, now are destroyed    (c )
Each day it seems lifetimes, each moment reversed    (d)
Racking her brain, “Why am I cursed?”            (d)
Ever ask yourself:  “Wonder what it’s really like?”    (e)

5.    Make your book come alive!!!

12 days? Really?

Yep, this year’s class of sixth grade has only twelve days remaining in the 2008-2009 school year.  Wowsers!

So, I have a couple or so of questions before you end and head into summer and seventh grade:

How has this year gone by for you?

What were the biggest surprises this school year for you?

What achievements were you the most proud of?

What was the wackiest moment in your year?

What will you miss the most from sixth grade?

What do you look forward to most about going into seventh grade?

Maybe take a moment to respond to a couple of the questions above–could be fun to read them again come fall!

Have you met Sal?

Now that we have finished reading Sharon Creech’s novel Walk Two Moons, I have a question for you:

Does Sal or Phoebe or Ben or Gram or Gramps or Margaret Cadaver or any other character remind you of anyone you know, including you?

Think about it.

Do tell!
