Sixth Grade English Curriculum
Items we will cover during the 2009-2010 school year:
Writing portion
o Narrative writing
o Following the study of story elements in a class novel (e.g., Walk Two Moons, Holes, The Westing Game, Hatchet, Stargirl), students will write a short story in narrative form.
o Friendly letter
o Students will learn elements of friendly letter writing, then publish and mail a friendly letter.
o Biographical sketch
o Students will learn the parts that make up a biographical sketch, and then apply those elements to a sketch of an important person in their lives.
o Poetry
o Students will be introduced to elements of poetry appreciation, as well as the necessary tools to create poetry of their own.
o Journal writing
o Students will maintain an in-class journal for daily writing activities.
o Students will use their journal in order to take notes regarding parts of speech, grammar, usage, and sentence fluency. (It is much more interesting than it sounds here, on this you have my word.)
